There are studies that show the similarities between the dialect of Negeri Sembilan and Minangkabau, such as phonology system (Reniwati, 1990) and greeting words (Reniwati & Ab. Razak, 2015). However, this paper is an attempt to compare the morphosyntax of both dialects. It is the assumption of this study that the fact that there is almost no morphosyntax was done on the dialect of Negeri Sembilan and Minangkabau. For that purpose, it is the aim of this study to examine the grammatical category of the dialect of Negeri Sembilan and Minangkabau. In this study, the grammatical category consists of the morphological and the syntactical aspects. The morphological aspect is concerned on affixation and determiner. And, the syntax is focused on possessive and auxiliary. The research was conducted in Kota Tinggi and Padang in Indonesia; and the districts of Rembau and Kuala Pilah in Negeri Sembilan. The research samples are based on recordings in the study area. Sample conversation consists of 15 informants, representing both dialect studied. Data were transcribed by research assistants who are native speaker of both dialects. Data were tested for their authenticity, in terms of spelling and structure. It is found that the use of prefix of nouns (perosak - parusak, kesudahannya - kasudahannyo, sesudah - sasudah), verbs (terjatuh – tajatuh, bersatubasatu/ bertigo-batigo, menyapu - manyapu); circumfix (meN-,,,-kan, such as mambarasiahan membersihkan), and possessive (punya, such as ‘Den punyo kodai’ – ‘Ambo punyo’/ ‘Punyo ambo) in Negeri Sembilan dialect different from Minangkabau dialect. Similarities of both dialects were found in the use of auxiliary (sudah/bona, hendak, mau) and causative (digunoan (digunakan), ditinggaan (ditinggalkan). This study contributes to the understanding of the grammatical category of the two dialects have in common in terms of language and culture.
