The growth of technology especially internet gives wider opportunity to all persons to produce writings accessible by other. One of the ways is through the use of online review writings on the websites. Online reviews cover some topics such as movies, books, food, tourist resorts, etc. Online review is a new register and the texts in this register have not been studied deeply. The study aims to investigate language functions in the online reviews of tourist resorts on the tripadvisor website through analyzing the keywords in the texts. Baker (2004) mentioned that keywords convey essential ideas in the texts. Therefore, analysing the keywords will give a clear view of what the writers intended. In the present study, the corpora contain of reviews of tourist resorts in Bali, Lombok, and Yogyakarta written by international traveler by the middle of 2015 to January of 2016. Each corpus represents the reviews of tourist resorts in one city. Therefore, there will be three corpora that have equal sizes (around 10,000 words for each corpus). Next, the keywords will be identified by using lextutor (a free online program to identify keywords, concordance, etc). Words that are mentioned as keywords are those who have significant frequencies compared to the reference corpus. Brown corpus will be chosen as the reference corpus because it was made up by written texts. Then, not all keywords will be analysed. They will be selected based on some criteria. First, they must occur in at least 2 corpora. Second, the minimum frequency in all corpora is 10. A close concordance analysis will be conducted to investigate language functions. The language functions will be categorized as describing, telling experiences, stating feeling, and giving advice and opinion. It is expected that the present research will give contribution to the study of online review register.
