This paper reviews the literature on the role of social entrepreneurship on poverty alleviation. Social entrepreneurship has been embraced with significant attention by researchers' and scholars across countries. Despite the growth of social entrepreneurship and emerging studies on it, there is no agreement on the definition of social entrepreneurship (Acs, Boardman, & McNeely, 2013; Dacin, Dacin, & Matear, 2010). Social entrepreneurship is generally defined as entrepreneurial activities with embedded social purposes and solutions that can generate income and social wealth in the society (Dees & Anderson,2006; Robinson, 2006). Thus, it is widely viewed that social entrepreneurship has a strong role to address social needs and problems to drive economic growth (Goel & Rishi, 2012). The broad objective of this article is to examine how social entrepreneurship engage and alleviate poverty. The main conclusions as follow: (1) organizations of social entrepreneurship can be grouped into for-profit structure and non-profit structure; (2) social entrepreneurs contribute in poverty alleviation by creating jobs to the poor. Social entrepreneurs utilise social innovation in achieving social mission as well as social impacts in the society, including combating poverty; and (3) there are some difficulties associated with measuring poverty alleviation. Thus, further empirical works needs to be carried out to understand how social entrepreneurs play roles in alleviating poverty, in particular to find the channel through which social entrepreneurs reduce poverty.
