Isi artikel
The purpose of the article is first to assess Korea's general trade policy and to examine the recent trends particularly within the framework of Free Trade Agreement. Korea's trade policy has developed over the past several decades based upon its domestic needs as well as the international trade environment. Among the many factors that brought about economic growth, the most outstanding was an externally-oriented trade policy. As to the more recent trend of Korea's foreign trade policy, Korea's interest in FTA began with the conclusion of NAFTA in 1993 as well as with the global spread of RTAs. In terms of substantive aspects of FTAs, Korea has maintained a high degree of consistency. First of all, it has pursued comprehensive FTAs, covering all sectors and substantially all trade in line with WTO disciplines. Korea has been making efforts to nurture more future-oriented and mutually beneficial bilateral trade relations with its trading partners. It appears that the aggressive regionalism approach will continue to be Korea's FTA policy. Negotiating free trade agreement, as with any other trade agreement, is a long-term process. As long as Korea continues to view FTAs as complementary to the multilateral system, it will certainly be able to maintain the balance with global trade liberalization.
