Isi artikelCommunication is important in everyday life of the organization. Limited time and bustle of work makes the individual unable to have a directly face to face communication. Gossip then has become one of the mechanisms to find out information about another individual. Gossip in the organization is informal communication by word of mouth that tends to be trusted by employees, and can quickly spread, though sometimes inaccurate. Regardless of the accuracy, gossip has four main roles, namely the role of information, entertainment, influence, and friendship. If the existence of gossip cannot be managed properly, gossip can affect employee motivation. This will lead to negative impacts on employees' work behavior. The role of gossip in the organization can be related to the level of employee motivation. In this study, we raised the theme of the role of gossip with employee motivation. We had 163 employees, 60.12% men and 39.88% women, aged 20-40 years (M = 24.44, SD = 3) in Jakarta with incidental sampling technique. We used Gossip Instrument and Motivational Analysis of Behavior questionnaires. We found no significant relationship between the role of gossip as information, influence, and friendship with work motivation. However, there was a significant relationship between the roles of gossip with the components of work motivation. The implication of this research on the working environment is that the employee should not often to use gosip function both as entertainment gossip and friendship as they tend to have low motivation to work. However, if used as information, gossip can be very useful, and if properly managed, gossip can be a rapid means of an internal communication for employees.
