Isi artikelThis classroom action research study aimed to improve the appreciative and creative movie-viewing skills through the 5R note taking technique. The research subjects were the students of the 2006/2007 enrolment years attending the Appreciative and Creative Listening subject at the Study Program of Indonesian Language and Literature, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Yogyakarta State University. The data were collected through participant observations, interviews, and field notes. They were analyzed using qualitative and qualitative descriptive techniques. The results of the study showed that the application of the 5R note taking technique was capable of improving the appreciative and creative movie-viewing skills, both in the process and the product. The success in the process was indicated by the students’ activeness and seriousness in the learning activities for the appreciative and creative movie-viewing through the 5R note taking technique. The success in the product was indicated by the improvement of their comprehension skills, appreciation, and enjoyment of the movies, reflected by the improvement of the report quality, the score attainment, and the appreciation.
