Isi artikelRepresentatives of national governments are now coming together to set the next development agenda, under the umbrella of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as the era of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) concludes. In order to attain the new goals, it may help to revisit what worked — and what didn't — in achieving the successes of the MDGs over the past 15 years. In 2000, a total of 189 heads of state signed the Millennium Declaration establishing eight development goals for 2000 through 2015. Within these eight goals, 21 targets were identified, and a monitoring framework with 48 indicators was developed to track progress. Health occupied a dominant role in this vision of development: three of the eight goals (Goal 4, reduce child mortality; Goal 5, improve maternal health; and Goal 6, combat HIV–AIDS, malaria, and other diseases) were health goals, and two other goals included health-related targets. Of the 21 targets for development, 8 were health-related, and 7 of these were framed quantitatively — for example, reduce child mortality by two thirds.
