Isi artikelThe optimal preoperative assessment of geriatric patients has recently been outlined in a 2012 guideline by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) and the American Geriatrics Society (AGS). This is an important and timely publication because people aged 65 years and older represent a significant and growing proportion of the general as well as the surgical population and have an increased comorbidity prevalence and higher rates of perioperative complications even after controlling for comorbidities. ACS NSQIP and AGS recommend a multisystem evaluation ( Box 1 ) that is detailed later, updated for more recent developments in system-specific recommendations.
