Isi artikel
Physiology is a complex, ever-changing state with changes occurring at the structural, functional, and molecular levels as people age. The process of aging is complex and multifactorial with multiple hypotheses broadly categorized into either the programmed theory or the error theory. The programmed theory states that delineated biological alterations in homeostatic state and natural defense occur over time. The error theory focuses on free radical accumulation secondary to reactive oxygen species generated during mitochondrial energy production, causing oxidative damage to DNA, protein, and lipids. No matter the theory, aging is defined as the normal progressive decline in function and ability to respond to intrinsic (eg, catecholamines, inflammation) or extrinsic (eg, infection, surgery) stimuli.
