Isi artikel
Second language writing scholarship hitherto has witnessed the tremendous impacts of the so called "social-turn'" (Trimbur, 1994) or "postmodern turn" era (see Paltridge, 2004) on how writing should be taught and researched. With the new orientations this era brings, serious ramifications in the teaching and researching writing ensue. Contesting composition orthodoxies which glorify pure cognition, this era opens up the possibility for infusing one's social and political stances in the process of writing and for negotiating and reconstructing meanings. With the emergence of this era, literacy has then been viewed no longer as a neutral and value-free activity, but instead as an ideological and cultural activity. Furthermore, the notion of knowledge is viewed as interested rather than disinterested. Finally, the foci of composition research have undergone a dramatic shift, which gives more prominence to the writer's identity in the process of text construction. In this article, I will first expound and then examine the discursive construction of competing approaches to writing pedagogy. An understanding of these competing processes to writing can help us unravel different ideologies dominating each approach. I will then proceed to discuss the emergence of the notion of multilingual writing by examining an influential publication on this issue, and then move to review what current research on identity in academic writing has told us. Finally, the implications of current research on identity and writing will be explored.
