Isi artikelIn a translation process, a translator renders not only the message of the source language into target language, but also the culture. It is a somewhat complicated process which happens inside the translator’s cognitive realm. Both translationists and translation practitioners have tried to map “the road” the translators have to take by classifying methods and strategies as translation guidelines. The dilemma a translator encounters when translating certain terms has been a subject of interest to analyse. To translate or not to translate has always been a question haunting a translator. Either choice s/he makes leads to criticism. Some translators prefer to use certain terms for one word, whereas other = translator might use another term for that same word. As seen in several TV series, a certain word will maintain its original form in one series, meanwhile in other series it is translated into Indonesian. To make matter more complicated, in a multimodal translation, in this case subtitling, the dilemma is exacerbated by the nature of the text itself. Each type of a text needs a different method. Regarding to the matter, the paper tries to look into the difficulties encountered in the translation of certain TV crime series, and find what works best to overcome the difficulties.
