Isi artikel
Comprehending a text in a foreign language without complete mastery of the language always involves the possibility of erroneous understanding. Three English multiword expressions translated into Indonesian from a newspaper column and conversations in cartoons are compared with dictionary entries for these expressions to show their various degrees of accuracy. It is followed by a discussion of the importance of multiword expressions as the carrier of meaning and of being aware of multiple meanings. The paper then looks at the potential benefits in using (expanded) concordance lines as material for comprehension exercises, practice in spotting different patternings in the context of expressions that have multiple meanings and distinguishing between multiple meanings.
