Isi artikelThis research paper aims at describing the degree of equivalence in the translation of Balinese Cultural terms into English by applying the method of back translation (Larson, 1998). The data of the study were taken from Indonesian short story entitled “Mati Salah Pati’ translated by Vern Cork (1999) into “ Death by Misfortune” and a Novel entitled Sukreni Gadis Bali (Tisna, 1991) and its Translation the Rape of Sukreni (Quinn, 1998).The approach applied in this study is qualitativedescriptive in order to get comprehensive understanding of the translation equivalents of the source language culture terms related to Balinese culture and their translation into English. The method applies in defining the readability level of the equivalents by utilizing backtranslation from the target text to the source text. The level of readability in terms of meaning equivalent was found to some degree are match and to some extent they are being modified in order to cover the representation of meaning components of the terms. This is due to cultural terms in one language are specific in the use of their own social phenomena within society. This shows that in the process of translation, translator has to define his or her decision falls on domestication or foreignisation (Venuti, 1995) of the terms being translated.
