Isi artikel
Literature is language in use, and therefore it cannot be separated from language. For Widdwson (1975) literature "contributes significantly to both the process and the purpose of language learning." Linguistically, literature can help students master the vocabulary and grammar of the language as well as the four language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Culturally, literature provides exposure to the culture of its speakers by examining universal human exprience within the context of a particular setting and the consciousness of a particular people. Aesthetically, literature expresses the most significant ideas and feeling of human beings. Therefore, the study of literature can integrate all of the language skills with one another, with exposure to English-speaking cultures, and with increased literary understanding and appreciation. This paper focuses on Literature and Reading, Literature and Writing , Literature and the Oral skills, and Literature and Culture.
