Isi artikelEnglish as a foreign language (EFL) in Indonesia has become a mandatory subject in secondary school to tertiary level (university). Currently, there are some elementary schools have taught English as local content in Indonesia. Almost all students in Indonesia have studied English for approximately 10 years, but their English communicative competence is very low. Therefore, to improve students' English proficiency, there are many strategic efforts and materials implemented by the teachers and educational practitioners. In teaching and learning English , there are lots of methods used by the teacher to improve learners' English competence and performance. On the other hand, the learners employ a wide variety of strategies to improve their English skills. One of materials that can improve learners' English skills is literary works . Through various genres of literary works, i.e., prose, poetry, and drama, the teaching of English in the classroom setting can be enriched through a wide range of procedures, such as: poem dictation, poem reading, split poem, poem writing, short story writing, short-short story writing (providing picture of two persons making dialogue taken from newspaper or magazine , and writing short story or short-short story based on theme given by the teacher), drama script writing , and drama performance.
