Isi artikelOld stories have been transcended from generation to generation over a long period. Reflecting the wisdoms and ways of life, those stories may help people find how to overcome difficulties in the reality and understand what causes their infantilistic lack of self-reliance or psychological state(Bettelheim, 2001). One of the most representative media of old stories is picture books to which children are so familiar. This study analyzes some picture books of old stories, that is, traditional fairy tales since those literatures have things unique in terms of text and illustration. Traditional fairy tales are another version of old stories that has been adapted with symbolic and psychological meanings to be appropriate for children(Kim, 1997). In those fairy tales, the lives and wisdoms of our ancestors are reflected. The works basically has the pursuit and realization of nature as their theme. In a similar vein, many of traditional fairy tales involve deities, a typical symbol of nature, in the human world. Deities connect humans to natural principles and, in that sense, they are sort of a medium(Kang, 1993). Similarly, deities appeared in traditional fairy tales are inseparably related to human life. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of deities that are appeared in picture books about old things Korean. and provide new insights to Korean traditional fairy tales. For this purpose, this study selected picture books to be analyzed, For the selection, we reviewed Korean traditional fairly tales which are listed in the revised 2007 National Curriculum of Preschool Education and the 7th National Curriculum of Elementary Education. And then, we reviewed prior researches(Kim, 2009; Ji, Kim & Cho, 2010) to examine the characteristics of folk deities that are appeared in Korean traditional fairy tales. At last, this study selected total 6 picture books to be analyzed,?Woodcutter and Fairy?,?Simcheong, Filial Daughter?, ?Rabbit and Turtle?, ?Gold Axe and Silver Axe?,?Princess Bari?and?Grandma Mago?. This study employed two categories of analysis. One is literary elements like character, background, plot, viewpoint, time and space(Nikolajeva, 2001/2011; Nodelman, 1996/2001). The other is artistic elements like line, color, form, shape and texture(Stewig, 1995; Kress & Leeuwen, 1996). In addition, this study used the content analysis to investigate how Korean folk deities are described in traditional fairy tales. Findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, deities found in traditional fairy tales help readers realize the meaning and importance of respecting the nature, environment, ancestors, home and elders. Second, deities appeared in traditional fairy tales lead readers to restore good relationships with all existences around them through respecting objects, building up not human-centered, but the universe-centered values and establishing nature-friendly views of the world. Third, deities as the characters of traditional fairy tales represent the embodiment of social justice by demonstrating triumph by the right over the wrong, punishment against the evil, protection of the weak, establishment of desirable social views, development of morality and the formation of righteous social values. Fourth, in traditional fairy tales, deities induce readers to make speculations on their inner needs such as preventing disasters, living an abundant life, avoiding corruptions, overcoming the reality with the help of the divinity and disciplining and awakening themselves. This study analyzed the characteristics of folk deities that are found in the traditional fairy tales of Korea. The research is significant in that it provides basic information necessary to understand the folk deities and beliefs of the country and hints about the prototype of Korean culture.
