Mobile phone addiction in youth is becoming a serious social problem in Korea. Thus, this study aims to investigate risk and protective factors affecting mobile phone addiction in adolescence by gender and to provide guideline data that can be used for preventing addiction based on the results of research. Data was obtained from the 3th wave of Korea Child and Adolescence Welfare Panel Survey. The subjects consisted of 2,162 junior high school students. The results revealed that factors affecting mobile phone addiction were different by gender and there were common and gender specific risk and protective factors. Aggression and aprosexia were identified as common risk factor of mobile phone addiction in both gender. In addition, identified gender specific risk factors were parental abuse for male, and experience of absence from school and social withdrawal for female. Identified common protective factors in both genders were behavior control and reading time. And ego-identity, and peer attachment were identified as gender specific protective factors for male, and for female, respectively. Through this study, we could confirmed that some risk and protective factors affecting mobile phone addiction were identified in both gender and some were identified in one specific gender. Thus, based on the results of this study, different strategies might be prepared to prevent mobile phone addiction in adolescence depending on each gender.
