Isi artikelThere has been recent news relating to the suicide of a middle school student in Seoul. The victim suffered from the bullying of peers in school. That came as a shock in our society. They say that ‘Anti-bullying Law’ will be established in Korea sooner or later. Over the past 30 years, clinicians and researchers have come to understand that school bullying is a serious threat to healthy adolescent development and a potential cause of school violence (Olweus, 1978). Adolescents who are victims of school bullying are at risk for a number of mental health problems. Hugh-Jones and Smith (1999) found that one-half of former bullying victims reported long-term effects of being bullied as a child, mostly affecting their personal relationships in adulthood. Anxiety, frustration, aggression, and suicidal ideation have been associated with peer bullying (Barchaia & Bussey, 2010). Adolescents who draw negative conclusions about their peers on the basis of their bullying experiences may develop self-control problems (e.g., selfrestraint difficulties such as impulsive behaviors and failure to inhabit anger; Crick & Bigbee, 1998). These adjustment problems have been shown to be indicators of a significant developmental risk in adolescents (Olweus, 1993). Negative emotions can also cause aggressive action to random targets, there is great potential to express displaced aggression by feature of adolescent development. Examples of this statement include the events of the Columbine High School Massacre (1999) and Virginia Tech massacre (2007). Aggression should be recognized as a developmental concept with features that cause its continuum and conduct disorder, antisocial behavior, and suicide are at the upper end (Hanke, 1996). Adolescents who are bullied may not express the same level aggression. The main aim of this research is two-fold: to assess the effects of parental attitudes, self-control capacity, academic achievement as mediators in the pathways from school violence to aggression and suicidal ideation; and to assess the differences in gender in the pathways.
