At present, the Chinese government is pushing forward new urbanization to stimulate economic development and urban employment. What is the relationship between urban employment and China’s economy? Using data during 1980 to 2011(manufacturing, to 2010) and the method of OLS and SVAR model with short-run restriction, it is found that for China, real GDP per capita will increase by 2.122% when urban employment increases by 1% every year by new policies and measures that provide new job opportunities; The effect of urban employment on the value-added of manufacturing is strongly positive and reaches the highest point in the fifth period, the value-added of manufacturing will increase by 2.72% when the number of employed persons in the urban area rises 1%, however, increase in the value-added of manufacturing can’t bring too many job opportunities; the growth of urban employment in China will lead to improvement of total factor productivity, and an increase of total factor productivity will decrease urban employment for China in the previous three periods and promote urban development in the next five periods; urban employment has a bigger positive impact on imports of goods and services. However, this kind of economic activities only last five years or so.
