Transition from elementary school to middle school is often difficult for students and their parents. Fewer have examined transition experiences from the perspective of parents. The purpose of this study was to investigate the educational needs of parents who had children either in the beginning of middle school or in their last year of elementary school. Participants were 391 parents whose children were 6th grader or first grader of middle school in Busan and Gyeongsang-namdo, South Korea. The questionnaires used in this research were developed by the authors. It consisted of two sections: one section was to obtain sociodemographic information and the other was to investigate parental perspectives about parents’ educational needs for children in the transitional period. T-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze the data. Results of this study were as follows: First, parents recognized the need of parent education for transitional period. Second, parents needed education how to care their children who were in the transitional period. They wanted to get more detail information, such as how to manage their children's academic performance in the middle school, adjust to different educational setting, make good relationships with peers and teachers, or motivate their children to learn. Last, for better school adjustment, parents who had children in 6th grade appeared more educational needs than those had children in middle schools. In conclusion, although parents seemed to recognize the importance and need of parent education to help successfully transit to upper schools, they needed to recognize their role to guide their children in the transitional periods.
