Isi artikelThe purpose of this study was to investigate the relations between perceived parenting styles, perceived marital conflict and guilt-proneness, and to analyze the influence of guilt-proneness on the perceived parenting styles and marital conflict by gender. For this study, self-reports data from 302 middle school students on perceived parenting styles, perceived marital conflict, and guilt-proneness were collected in Ulsan city of Korea. As for instruments, Perceived parenting behavior inventory, The Children‘s Perception of Interparental Conflict: (CPIP), and Test of self- Conscious Affect: (TOSCA-Adol) were employed. Only 289 students (141male, 148 female) were analyzed for descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation, and multi regression analysis via SPSS 18.0, while 13 responses were disregarded as they were not qualified and low reliability. The results of this study were as follow. First, perceived parenting styles and perceived marital conflict were associated with the guilt-proneness. Male students were highly significant positive correlated with father’s affection and guilt-proneness. Female students were highly significant positive correlated with mother’s rational explanation and guiltproneness. Second, among male students, father’s affection, mother’s over -involvement, non-consistency, father’s abusiveness, marital conflict influenced on guilt-proneness, having 33% power of influence. Third, among female students, mother’s rational explanation, and father’s supervision, mother’s abusiveness, supervision influenced on guilt-proneness, having 17% power of influence. Based on the result, it is assumed that when we counsel and provide guidance to adolescent, parents would play a very important role in dealing with guiltproneness. Parent education for parenting styles and managing marital conflict should be provided for coping with the guilt-proneness for adolescence. The implications and limitation were discussed along with some suggestions for the future studies and counseling practice.
