A Longitudinal Comparative Study of Physique and Physical Fitness of Children between the Forest Kindergarten and the General Kindergarten (abstract only)

The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the possible changes of children's physique and physical fitness based on their experience of forest kindergarten. The research participants are children aged among 3, 4, and 5 in Forest kindergartens and general kindergartens in four different places. Children’s physique and physical fitness were measured primarily in March, 2011, secondarily in November, 2011 and finally in December, 2012. The total number of children who were measured were 432 children. All of the measurements (primary, secondary, tertiary) were analyzed including children in forests kindergarten group (n=34) and general kindergarten group (n=30). For statistics, t-test within group and one-way ANOVA between groups was conducted through SPSS 20.0 for 64 children. Children's conditions on physique(body height and body weight) and physical fitness(back strength, side step, sit-up, sit and reach, one leg stand, and standing long jump) were measured for the three times including pre, middle, and post test). The results of this study were as follows: children's body height in all groups has significantly increased. One of the Important results of this study is the signigicant increasement of body height of children in Forest kindergarten group than children in general kindergarten group. With regard to body height of children, children in Forest kindergarten group has significantly increased in physical fitness(back strength, side step, sit-up, sit and reach, and standing long jump) than children in general kindergarten group. This study shows that experience of Forest kindergarten can improve physique and physical fitness of children. The result of this study will be helpful to seek an alterative for solving health problems related to children's insufficient exercises, and letting children live a healthy life as well as preparing an opportunity to spread forest kindergarten in Korean society.
