Measurement of emotional experience have traditionally relied on self-report to track listener perception or preference. Hence, obtaining reliable and valid verbal responses from young children and special needs students would be a challenge because their limited verbal skills. The present study measured subjects’ real time affective response to music in an unobtrusive manner. A mobile electrodermal activity (EDA) and motion sensor was used to capture physiological changes that occur during different emotional states. Results suggest that amateur musicians exhibited most frequent emotional response to transformation of melody found in variations of a familiar musical theme. Trained musicians and subjects with no formal musical training exhibited non-significant response. Findings point to an intriguing dilemma whereby the ability to perceive fine changes in compositional device may become a confounding variable which affect a subject to elicit emotional response.
