Isi artikelWith the rapidly growing of computer technology, computer-assisted language learning (CALL) has been a popular language learning tool in the worldwide in order to encourage and attract students to learn independently and autonomously (Gunduz, 2005; Higgins, 1995). The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of online autonomous learning on EFL students’ reading ability. Sixty-five subjects from two reading classes at one university in southern Taiwan with the equivalent English reading proficiency level were divided into the experimental group and the control group. A quasi-experimental research by employing an independent-samples t-test, a paired-samples t-test, and descriptive statistics was conducted in this study. The research results demonstrate that a significant difference is found between the experimental group and the control group. In addition, there is a significant difference between the pre-test and posttest scores, indicating that the experimental group makes a progress after employing the online learning system, FunDay. Based on the research results, pedagogical implications for better improvement in teaching reading with the appropriate usage of CALL are presented.
