Isi artikel
This review synthesizes a total of eight empirical studies on institutional discourses about the perceived role of English in mainland China. The review covers research in the areas of curriculum development, language policy, internationalization of higher education, motivation studies in second language acquisition, as well as Chinese-English bilingual education in China. Initial analysis suggests that China’s institutional discourses about English language are closely tied to the country’s changing geopolitical and geoeconomic aspirations, domestic political transitions and concerns for Chinese national identity. This line of inquiry may serve as a starting point for future comparative studies on the role of English in Greater China.
