Isi artikel
An undergraduate international program at the Faculty of Psychology Universitas Indonesia is a joint program with the School of Psychology University of Queensland, Australia. Students start at the Universitas Indonesia for two years following which they continue at the University of Quuensland if they meet the English language requirement. Since the majority of the students have Indonesian language as their mother tongue, studying in English brings some adjustment, both cognitively and emotionally, especially when it comes to write argumentative articles. The objectives of this comparative study between writing argumentative articles in Indonesian and in English language are twofold: to identify the difficulties the undergraduate psychology students face when they are asked to write this type of writings, and the ways they use to overcome the difficulties. Participants are 16 undergraduate psychology students from year 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 intake. Individual interview is used as data collection technique. The results of the study show that the longer they study in English language environment, the more able they are to write argumentative articles. Interestingly, the cognitive and emotional adjustment the students make when studying in Australia are related to the quality of their argumentative writings. The implications of the findings can be followed up by researching more about the relationship among cognition, emotion, and argumentative writings.
