Isi artikelKano, an important Emirate in Northern Nigeria, witnessed the establishment of British colonial rule in 1903. It was followed by institutionalization of policies that were not at variance with the objective of colonial rule of exploitation. The exploitation of resources in the area would remain futile in as much as the populace continued to be ravaged by diseases. It was however, part of the British policy to prioritize the safeguarding of the health of their personnel and other Europeans against what they termed filth and diseases of the natives before extending it elsewhere. This explains why Europeans and other officials were the first to enjoy modern health services. However, the neglect of Kano people in health care provisioning was counter productive and against the interest of colonialism. As a result this, attention had to be paid in tackling the problems. British tactfully pushed the responsibility to Kano Native authority (N.A.) despite the enormous taxes been collected. This resulted in the construction of City Hospital (C.H.) Kano that became the largest N.A. hospital not only in Nigeria but in the whole of West African Sub-region during the colonial period. By using history sources the paper analyzed the establishment of C.H. by Kano N.A. and the challenges encountered in the process such as convincing the people to abandon their age long traditional medicine and to accept modern medication/health services. It is evidently clear as the study demonstrates that the Kano N.A. leadership under the Emir accepted modern health care services, funded the construction of a hospital at the difficult period of Great Depression of 1929-1939 and encouraged the masses to patronize in order as to be cured of some ravaging diseases bedeviling the area.
