Isi artikel
In recent years there has been a fall in the numbers of united kingdom students entering PhD programmes in economics. This is likely to be important for the future of discipline, both as an academic subject and in terms of the subject's outside influence (especially in using academic research to inform government thinking and policy). Understanding why it has happened, and determining whether it is likely to be associated with problems in replenishing the stock of academic econonmists, is the concern of this paper.
