Isi artikelThe Czech Republic, like many other countries in the European Union is moving towards a more inclusive education system, although the development and practice of inclusive education in this country is largely unknown internationally. The purpose of the paper is to discuss available information about inclusive practices in the Czech Republic and the role of the school principal. In light of extant literature, a number of challenges emerge for this Central European country as it moves towards a more equitable system. For example, areas for improvement comprise a need for a revision of current policy, the meaning and use of integration and inclusion terminology and an investment in professional discussion concerning the meaning, understanding and practice of inclusive education at systemic levels. The role of the principal and the practice of school leadership in promoting and sustaining inclusive education is considered to be central to further developments in inclusive education development in this Central European country. From a brief review of international literature it appears that the school principal has a pivotal role in leading inclusion in schools. In addition, inclusive leadership is considered to affect and influence the views held by the local community. This perspective of leadership for Czech school principals is further deliberated through scrutiny of available information such as education policy and reports from recognised authorities. The role of the school principal is also considered from a cultural historical perspective. The discussion topic presented in the paper is timely, and according to our evaluation, is one of the first to derive from this Central European country with regard to Inclusion.
