In the teaching of languages, as in anything else, there are four levels of learning, according to importance and frequency. This work, based in my experience of twelve years as preparatory teacher for the Foreign Language Examination (English) of both Master’s and Doctor’s degree in Brazil, aims to present a model of how to teach these levels by selecting songs with a predominant level. To teach the level four or kernel level, including words and structures very important and frequent, we selected two songs: All together now, by The Beatles, in which almost every word and structure is extremely important and frequent; and Blowing in the wind, by Bob Dylan, with emphasis in interrogative expressions and modal verbs. Level three or common level comprises important words and structures, but not frequent exemplified by two songs: My Way, by Frank Sinatra, with words like curtain, regrets, chew, my share, subside; and Sympathy for the devil, by The Rolling Stones, with words concerning social relations and politics. Level two or general level deals with words or structures of general use (including popular language and slang), but smaller importance. The two songs selected, by The Mamas & The Papas, are: Dream a little dream of me, with words and structures dealing with emotions and the night, like beam, craving, longing, “nighty-night”; and Sing for your supper, with a vocabulary related to meals and birds. The last level is level one or specific and metaphorical level, with specific words or words employed in a connotative way. The selected songs are Happiness is a warm gun, by The Beatles, with words and metaphors like hobnail, fix, trigger, the touch of the velvet hand, lying with his eyes; and To Everything There Is a Season, by The Byrds, taken form The Ecclesiastes, with plenty of biblical and rural expressions.
