Isi artikelStudent mobility in cross-border education has become an important mode of internationalization in higher education. With increasing demands for nontraditional locations and for study abroad opportunities in less developed countries, international educators need not only to understand the impact of globalization on higher education and educational practices in the developed countries, but also to confront and perhaps mitigate the negative impacts of study abroad on host communities in the developing countries. This paper critically examines globalization and its impact on higher education student mobility. By analyzing recent trends and objectives of student mobility in cross-border education, this paper raises the question of ethical challenges that international student mobility might have on the host communities in the developing countries. It argues that the commercialization of study abroad programs has had an indelible impact on student behaviour and government policies thus can create tensions in working with international partners. Suggestions for promoting globally responsible study abroad programs as well as for future research are also discussed.
