Isi artikelThe present study explored personality patterns in medical students enrolled in a medical institute in Malaysia. A personality index for medical students was developed based on a systematic review of the literature, and was administered to 671 students (21% first year, 26% second year, 20% third or fourth year, 24% fifth year). A one-way ANOVA was used to explore differences in personality among the medical students. Significant differences were identified among the students in Self-Awareness, Achievement-Striving, Communication, Integrity, Selflessness, Stress Tolerance, and Leadership. First year medical students were more likely than second year students to display self-awareness, communication, and leadership, probably because of an emphasis on communication and leadership skills in the medical curriculum during the first year. Fifth year students, who had already been introduced to medical ethics, scored higher on medical ethics than their juniors. Interestingly, third and fourth year students both displayed lower levels of selflessness and stress tolerance than their first year counterparts. The findings revealed no significant differences among the year classes with regard to Teamwork, Problem Solving, Planning and Organising, and Flexibility Towards Change. Further work will be needed in order to account for the effects of institutional resources and student socio-economic status. However, the findings of the present study carry implications for helping students develop medical leadership and professionalism.
