Th epapers in the symposium result from efforts by the royal economic society and its members to find out the facts about british academic economics. The RES committee on women in economics started the ball roling in 1996 with its first survey of economics departments in the united kingdom, undertaken by two academics in their own time after the committee found that there simply were no statistics on the gender distribution of academic eocnomists.
