A time of both disorientation and discovery, adolescence is commonly understood as the period of life between childhood and adulthood (Degner, n.d.). The beginning of biological changes during adolescence can significantly affect one’s psychosocial development (Stang & Story, 2005). That is, individuals become increasingly alert as to how others perceive them which result to an increase in self-consciousness (Umaña-Taylor, Diversi, & Fine, 2002). Furthermore, social influences largely affect adolescent’s body image satisfaction level. Thus, unsatisfactory changes in body shape and size may cause a great deal of ambivalence among adolescents which leads to the development of poor body image (Croll, 2005). Body image is people’s perception, thoughts, feelings and attitudes of their own bodies which are formed in their minds or the way in which their bodies appear to themselves (Grogan, 2008). During adolescence, increased body image concerns caused by social acceptance and social pressures have become widespread among adolescents which lead to distorted body image, particularly body image dissatisfaction (Croll, 2005). Body image dissatisfaction may increase suffering and intensify self-destructive attitudes (Pompili et al., 2007). It is also associated with higher rates of suicide probability for adolescent males and females. Suicide probability is generally understood as tendency to end one’s own life. It can be in the form of thoughts and attempt about suicide (Crow et al., 2008). The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between body image satisfaction level and suicide probability of both male and female adolescents. It can also add to researches about body image and suicide in the Philippines. Likewise, it can also be used as future reference for suicidologists, psychologists, and guidance counselors alike.
