The aging population (aged 65 years and older) in the United States accounts for approximately 13% of the total population and, based on scientific projections, by 2030 will account for 18% of the total U.S. population. Fifteen years from now, more than 72 million individuals will be above the age of 65 years.1 The aging of the general population is not unique to the United States. The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs estimates that by 2050, those aged 60 years or over will make up about 21% of the total global population.
