To be able to write an abstract is compulsory for graduate students. Abstract is a summary of a scientific writing that can represent the contents of a research report. By reading the abstract, the readers can decide whether they will continue reading the research report or not. Abstract must be written concisely with correct grammar and appropriate sequences and words. Some graduate students find it difficult to write an appropriate abstract. For this purpose, an error analysis was conducted to identify the common grammatical errors made by the graduate students of Institut Pertanian Bogor in the Academic Year of 2013-2014. The population of the study was all the abstracts written by the graduate students of Master Program in the Academic Year 2013/20114, and the samples of the study included fifty abstracts from a number of majors. The whole printed papers of the students were analyzed to identify the most common grammatical errors they made using descriptive analysis to get the pictures of the errors most and less frequently used. The results showed that most students still made mistakes in subject-verb agreement, parts of speech, and active-passive voice. The results of this study can be used as an input for the Graduate School of the university as well as for the English teachers to improve the teaching of writing.
