Isi artikel
An increase in presenting papers on critical discourse analysis in linguistic seminars indicates that the ‘new’ paradigm in linguistic studies attracts the linguists’ attention. Critical discourse analysis or CDA offers a new perpective of analysing a text compared to non-critical discourse studies. It provides an approach which combines the analysis of language texts with a socio-cultural context of discourse. Using CDA, linguists will be able to uncover the way social abuse, dominance, and inequality are enacted through discourse practices. The tendency, however, has not been supported by the ability to analyze texts appropiately, completely, and sistematically. Based on the preliminary observation, there are many papers on CDA that merely describe the language expression of texts or freely interpreted the texts. The first tendecy results a finding that is not different from the non-critical approach and the second one results a free commentary rather than a detailed linguistic analysis. That phenomenon is problematic, especially when their studies are published. The way they analyze texts will be assumed as the model of analysis which is correct and may be imitated by other researchers. Based on the phenomenon, I am interested in conducting the study on the ways the authors of papers on CDA analyed their data. My focus is on explaining whether or not their practices of analysis have followed the methods of critical discourse analysis and on offering a solution to fulfill the gap in the analysis stage. To do the research, I use 26 papers on CDA as data. The papers have been presented in four International seminars: KIMLI, SETALI, LAMAS, and KOLITA, during 2014. I use theoretical concepts of CDA proposed by Fairclough (2001, 2003) and van Dijk (1993).
