Isi artikelThe widespread inevitable use of computers in schools has far become part of our everyday lives, one of which is as a tool for language learning. The level of its both necessity and urgency is so apparent that, for language teachers, the use of this kind of new technological era would push them to utilize it as a promising pedagogical media. There were some considerable rejection on this idea in the beginning, but now we can see that the usage of desktop, laptop, even tablet to accompany the learning process has been commonplace. Combining technology with structured, early literacy program to better shape reading skill would be a hopeful way. There should be a harmonious incorporation of multimedia approach and a strongly curriculum-based game that is interactive and encouraging in order to fulfill all reading skills and levels, whether a beginner or an expert reader. A more specific form of digital era is such above-mentioned software program of Smarty Ants Reading World (SARW) as the example. Created in US by Mike Wood, SARW has been deployed to several kindergarten and elementary schools in Jakarta and surrounding areas for almost 3 years. With the opportunity of collecting coins, trophies and medals when achieving progress, students are positively awarded and encouraged. The sense of higher confidence is boosted among learners so they would feel that they are not only playing but also learning. Reading skill is important among students as a prerequisite before they go to higher level of education. According to Threlkeld And Nathan (2012), the ability to think critically while reading become more complex as children move on to high school and into careers. However, the level of literacy achievement is much less than we expect. Such deep concern arises from reality that, for example, in Indonesia, there was only 1 person to 1,000 with adequate reading interest (UNESCO, 2012). Even in US, there was only one-third of all students entering high school are proficient in reading (National Assessment of Educational Progress, 2009). Some schools as SARW users have shown some significant changes after they use SARW program for some period of time with the result of various levels. With the expected academic result, there is evidence that SARW can be an effective tool to help students enhance their reading proficiency.
