Genre-based approach has become a mandated approach since 2006 curriculum. However, many teachers still do not know how to implement it though they are familiar with the term. Therefore, most of them do not fully implement it well. In line with the issues, this study was then designed to investigate the implementation of genre-based approach in teaching writing conducted by an English teacher involved in this qualitative case study. The data about the implementation were collected through two ways namely passive participant observation and semi structured interview toward the teacher. The collected data were then analyzed by using the data analysis model of Miles & Huberman consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The data analysis process is based on the synthesized theory of genre-based approach used in this study. The findings demonstrate that the teacher only conducted three of four stages of the approach namely BKOF, MOT, and ICOT with various activities in each step. It therefore can be concluded that the teacher did not fully implement the genre-based approach as suggested by the theory. With respect to the findings, the teachers are recommended to enrich the understanding of genre-based approach and in order to teach more effectively.
