Isi artikelAmerica, with about equal measures of celebration and condemnation, loves to indulge in rebellions and rebirths, evolutions and revolutions, renewals and restorations in virtually all areas of its public life, often combining aesthetic development and political and spiritual reform into a dynamic mix of art and argument. It seems that Americans have an urge to "rediscover" aesthetic and theoretical/philosophical qualities that they feel have lain dormant, to see them rise again, polished up and reformulated for a new cultural age. In this paper, I will examine important elements of two important American cultural renaissances and some of their important leaders—Ralph Waldo Emerson and the "preachers" of the early-mid 19th century first American renaissance; and John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate and the "teachers" of the early-mid 20th century Southern Renaissance. Through their essays, letters, poetry and public statements I will examine several common traits coursing through these two renaissances, creating a common ground of development for both. The deepest and most long-running impulse connecting the first American and the Southern renaissances is in impulse toward transcendentalism in American society and letters. This important factor conditions several other key elements common to these two renaissances, including religion and mystical thought, the influence of western/classical humanism and Enlightenment thought, back-to-nature sensibilities and anti-industrialism, and internal and external conflict and rebellion. Additionally, a key historical event, the American Civil War, links these two movements across time. With the Civil War creating a fulcrum of social change and consequence between then, Iwil show that the first american and southern renaissances are located at each end of an important historical continuum demarking american literature from the"beginning of the beginning" to the "end of the beginning " of a critical phase of its development.
