A study was conducted on the Merchandise Transfer System of Duty Free Philippines Corporation (DFP) with the objective of identifying the major problems with the process, analyzing their fundamental system-level causes, and proposing an IT-based solution to alleviate the root cause and consequently improve the overall performance of the system. Over the period of the study, several issues with the process were observed such as the prevalence of manual activities being done by various personnel despite the availability of computer-based alternatives, forecasts primarily based on employee intuition, and a replenishment policy that lead to significant overstocking within both warehouse and store inventories. A solution was generated in order to remedy the negative effects of these issues, but most especially with overstocking as it led to significant inventory holding costs. This solution would include the installation of an open source-based software stack on existing hardware combined with focused and consistent user involvement in the way of training seminars, user feedback, and workflow migration management. The proposed application will also accommodate an auto-replenishment module, specifically made to reduce the heavy costs incurred due to holding excess inventory. The results of the implementation of the software were simulated using a specifically analyzed mathematical model that is to be integrated within the application's replenishment module and will be the basis for controlling the inventory levels of the company once implemented. Overstocking within both the main warehouse and the store was found to be reduced by as much as 3500% based on the simulation results of the implementation.
