Under the assumption that components of aggregate spending are closely more related linked to movements in long-term interest rates, monetary policy actions affecting short-term interest are linked to the aggregate economy through the term structure of interest rates. The term structure and the relationship between long-term rates and expectated inflation become important in policy design. By treating an interest rate as the variable under the control of central bank, one obtains a framework that more closely matches the way in which most policy makers view policy.
