A Case Study on the Utilization of a Roadside Station for Local Revitalization

Some local areas in Japan have been facing the situation of decreasing the size of the population. The possible reasons for this are not only a rapid decrease in birth rate and increase in aging people, but an increase in population in urban areas. One of the example areas is Suzu city in ishikawa Prefecture in Japan. Suzu city is located at the tip on Noto Peninsula. Its population has been decreasing dramatically and the number of aging people accounts for over 40% of the total number of the residents. It is an urgent issue to revitalize this kind of area. The previous study related to the revitalization of Suzu city conducted a survey for the residents. The results showed that a roadside station, called “Michi-no-eki” should be utilized as a place for the residents to have communication with neighbors and to buy some light meals because there are no restaurants near the resident area. In this study, we examined the effect on the use of Michi-no-eki by providing light meals for the residents in Suzu city. As a result, more people visit the Michi-no-eki when they live closer to it. The sales showed the running cost of the light meal shop was quite reasonable. In addition, a survey for the tourists was conducted in order to make use of the Michi-no-eki more effectively. The result showed that since tourists often visit the place with their family, the menu in the light meal shop should be considered for those tourists’ needs.
