Bamboo is one of the oldest and most versatile building materials with wide applications in the field of construction particularly in developing countries. It is strong and light and can often be used with minimum processing or finishing steps. Bamboo constructions are easy to build, resilient to wind and even earthquake forces, and quickly repairable in the event of damage. This study reviewed mechanical testing results of some bamboo species, tested according to ASTM D 143 and ISO 1776. Mechanical properties of bamboo might change with respect to specific gravity as found in the wood standard. Moisture content average of 15% and specific gravity of 0.55-0.85 were used as data base for evaluation of the relation between mechanical properties and specific gravity of bamboo. A power equation having a covariance of 5% was developed and compared with those given in Indonesia National Standard for Timber Construction (SNI, 2002). The results showed that the mechanical properties of bamboo could be well predicted based on its specific gravity value. Compressive strength parallel to the grain, //, compressive strength perpendicular to the grain -, bending strength, sb, tensile strength, and shear strength equaled to sc // = 76.89 G1.725, sc - = 11.12 G0.304, sb = 188.1 G1.491, st = 207.2 G0.304 and ss = 14.24 G1.791, respectively, where G is the specific gravity.
