Isi artikelNatural gas is expected to substitute the conventional fossil fuel as a clean energy source for sustainable development and demand is gradually increasing. The development of natural gas fields in cold regions attracts global investment but the environment in permafrost regions is so vulnerable that development may subject it to unrecoverable damage. In this paper, the engineering characteristics of the environment in permafrost regions are introduced with a survey report on existing pipelines in West Siberia. The direction of further study in technological development for the establishment of safe and reliable pipeline network is briefly explained. Sustainable development in vulnerable environments such as permafrost regions is only possible if correct knowledge available and suitable engineering technology. Lessons learnt from engineering in permafrost may also be helpful for development in other vulnerable environments such as tropical and desert regions.
