Isi artikelSustainable structural engineering is based on the basic principle that the energy and resources consumption due to the erection and operation of a building or structure must be minimized. For the structural engineer this opens up two possibilities: On the one hand, the embedded energy necessary for the erection of the building must be minimized, for example by using cement reduced concretes. On the other hand, this approach only leads to a sufficient sustainability if a sufficient durability of the structure is guaranteed. This means that the durability of the structures, and especially of our infrastructure, must be sufficient to withstand the different environmental exposures during the planned service life. Therefore it is necessary to use durable building materials in connection with elaborated tools which allow for the prediction of the time dependent material behaviour. Against this background this paper focuses on the properties, mainly the durability and the sustainability of new types of concrete, with a special focus on Ultra High Performance Concrete. Furthermore, the basic tools of probabilistic design concepts for durability and the related material models are dealt with and different applications in practice will be shown. Particular emphasis is laid on the failure analysis and the risk assessment. New approaches will be presented to deal with coupled degradation processes and to integrate durability design with singular structural damages (e.g. failure of pre-stressing).
