Isi artikelFor years I have been designing classroom materials involving tasks graded at different levels of difficulty. These have been prepared for the teaching of reading in classes attended by students with different levels of competence in English. This paper intends to describe and discuss action research undertaken in the classroom to investigate the assumptions underlying the grading of the tasks. Personal interviews, field notes, questionnaires, and classroom diaries used in this research reveal my students’ perception of the tasks and of the type or degree of difficulty involved. Some evaluative comments regarding task difficulty as well as some suggestions for materials design are also presented.
