Isi artikel
Language teachers should concern themselves with teaching etiquette because it is both academically defensible as a part of communication and because students are interested in the topic. Teaching etiquette can involve content, process, and affect learning. Techniques discussed include ’cultural asides,’ ‘culture capsules,’ and ‘cultural slots’ to treat content learning. Other devices, which are treated in greater detail and which provide greater student involvement and process learning, are instructional games (e.g., “Sovietiquette” and “Tactword”), inquiry techniques (e.g., identifying objects, illustrations of jaux pas), and acting techniques (e.g., audio-motor units, role-play irlg). Finding tleepcr intercultural similarities beneath surface t1iRerencc.s requires a more imaginative approach than merely telling students about the differences. Content sow. es for French, German, Hispanic, and Russian cultures are also provided.
