Our best preparation for the future of foreign language teaching is to recognize the directions of change in our present situation. The author examines changing relations and changing directions, the present state of the field from the point of view of the classroom teacher, the future demands on the classroom teacher in view of these changing relations and directions, the steps that can be taken to ensure develop ment of a flexible and future-oriented profession, and steps the profession can take to influence de cision makers. The see& of the future of foreign language teaching are seen to lie in the hands of' the present teachers and those they train.
