Isi artikelA great variety of authentic cultural elements may be introduced in the foreign language classroom. The study of such elements must be carefully integrated with the study of language. Cultural content ought not to be presented at the expense of language learning but as an interrelated system. To illustrate, four detailed assignments and follow-up classroom activities are outlined. They deal with two separate sociocultural aspects concerning French white-collar workers and small shopkeepers. This demonstration in French presents various techniques designed to help the students first comprehend the material, then interact among themselves, using the language within an accurate cultural context. Despite lengthy preparation by the teacher. such structured techniques allow more time for conversation in the classroom and prevent many interferences of both the native language and the native cultural attitudes.
